Spam and malware — what are they?

Spam is unsolicited bulk communications sent in an attempt to steal your sensitive information and access credentials, whereas malware — a malicious form of software designed to damage or exploit your device, systems, and networks — aims to disrupt the normal functioning of your business, steal your information, and secretly spy on your activities.

Following some simple steps, such as installing anti-virus software, enabling multi-factor-authentication (MFA), and avoiding suspicious e-mails and links, can help protect you and your guests from the effects of spam and malware. So stay safe, secure and vigilant.

Phishing: how to spot it and stay protected

Phishing scams are getting more prevalent, with attacks occurring via e-mails, text messages, websites, and telephone calls. Once a scammer has installed a virus on your device or tricked you into revealing sensitive information — for example, the credit card details and passwords belonging to you and your guests — they can steal huge sums of money and even identities.

To help recognise and protect against phishing, remember the following:

  • Our e-mail messages come from official SiteMinder official domains, specifically:

  • Any website links we share with you are also hosted on these domains.

  • We will never contact you via subdomains or domains with different extensions — for example, domain.biz.

  • We will not ask for your username, password, or any other sensitive information via e-mail.

  • Be cautious of unexpected and/or urgent e-mails claiming to come from us.

  • Preview links and attachments before opening them, and if you are still unsure, log in directly rather than clicking a link in the e-mail.

  • Pay close attention to the sender’s e-mail address; assess if it is legitimate.

  • Scrutinise the format and content of the e-mail: authentic e-mails will include not only your full name, but also your account information and customer numbers.

  • Look for any unusual spelling and grammatical errors — a tell-tale sign of fraud.

  • Be wary of suspicious offers, vouchers, and discounts; if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

  • Keep an eye out for fraudulent log-in screens with illegitimate URLs.

⚠️ If you receive a suspicious e-mail from someone impersonating SiteMinder, please report it to your provider and notify our customer support team.
